SHOT AND KILLED

John Harper and Tom Richardson both colored, living on the plantation of Mr. Charles Harper of this county, engaged in a row last Monday 31st ult, which resulted in the killing of Harper by Richardson. The shooting occurred about one o'clock p.m. It is reported that Harper ran the distance of a mile after being shot, followed by Richardson and his kinsman with guns and pistols intending to finish their murderous work. Harper found refuge in the house of Austin Humphries on Mr. Joe Scoggins' plantation, who protected him from butchery and sent the blood-thirsty mob away.

The funeral of the murdered man was conducted from Harper's Mission A.M.E. Church and was largely attended. John was connected with the Odd Fellows Fraternity and was buried at the Old Jordan cemetery with Odd Fellows honors on Wednesday, June 2nd.
