William Fraley

William Fraley (1795-1877) came to Sparta as a young man from Philadelphia and established a carriage factory. In 1825 he married Demaris Ingram. He served on the board of the Sparta Female Model School organized in 1831 where his daughter Rebecca was a student. His wife was president of the Ladies Soldiers Aid Society of Hancock during the Civil War. Rebecca Fraley's husband, Captain Henry Culver, reportedly diverted Sherman's raiders from Sparta in 1864. The family lived in the Abercrombie House on Maiden Lane, which was built by Sparta's founder, Major Charles Abercrombie. The unmarked graves most likely are Fraley, his wife, and another member of the family.
