Death of Dr. T. S. Powell (obituary from Union Recorder, Jan 7, 1896)

Dr. Thomas S. Powell died at his home in Atlanta on Monday morning, 30th of December, 1895. He was a leading physician and was devoted to his profession. He was President of the Southern Medical College of Atlanta.

Dr. Powell was born in Brunswick county, Va., in 1826. He graduated with honor from the University of Pennsylvania. He came to Georgia in 1846, locating in Hancock County, where he acquired considerable reputation as a physician. In 1848 he was made a professor in Atlanta Medical College, and continued with that institution until 1866, when he resigned.

Dr. Powell married, for the first time in 1846, Miss Lulia Bass of Sparta, Ga., a grand daughter of Governor Rabun. His second wife, who was Mrs. Jennie Miller of Virginia, survives him.

A special train carried the remains of Dr. Powell, accompanied by a large number of the prominent citizens of Atlanta, to Sparta last Wednesday, where the interment took place in the afternoon.

Dr. T. O. Powell, Superintendent of the State Lunatic Asylum in this city, is a brother of the deceased and went to his bedside as soon as he was informed of his serious illness and was with him when he died.
