Franklin Alexander Guill

Franklin Alexander Guill was born August 26, 1874 in Sparta, Georgia, the fifth child of Alexander Guill and his wife Nancy Holliday Warthen. He grew up, and lived his entire life in Hancock County as a farmer, dying there on April 11, 1944. From 1903 until his death, he lived with Pearl Gordon, a woman of color, by whom he had eight children. He was devoted to them and they to him, as evidenced by the monument his children erected on his grave. Pearl Gordon and some of their children are buried in the family cemetery located on the farm on the eastern edge of Sparta upon which they were born and reared. His children by Pearl Gordon were Nancy (wife of John Jackson), Leo, Camille (wife of Benny Glascoe), Rowena (wife of John Moore), Frank, Alexander (husband of Marilyn H. Guill, nee Higgins), Woodrow, and Edgar. Leo, Frank, Woodrow and Edgar never married. Nancy and Camille spent most of their adult lives working in the New York City area but returned to Hancock County with their husbands upon retiring. Alexander and his family settled in Lynbrook, N.Y. Rowena and her family settled near Elizabeth City, N. C. One of Frank Alexander Guill’s descendants, Keith Glascoe, was a fireman who died in the September 11, 2001 disaster in New York City.
