Marshall Franklin Guill

Marshall Franklin Guill, son of Marshall Abner Guill and Zella Ada Guill, nee Moore, was born at 516 E. Broad Street, Sparta, Hancock County Georgia on September 20, 1897 and died on May 11, 1931 at Grace Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut, from injuries received in an automobile collision in Guilford, Connecticut. He graduated from the 10th District Agricultural and Mechanical School, Granite Hill, Hancock County in 1914 and received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1918 from Georgia School of Technology. While a student at Georgia Tech, he was a recognized student leader and athlete. He was a star football player, being a member of Georgia Tech�s famous "Golden Tornadoes". During World War I he served as an ensign in the United States Navy. From the time of his discharge from the Navy until his death, he was employed by the Grinnell Corporation in Providence, Rhode Island. Because of his fame as a football star at Georgia Tech, his death was the principal front page headline of the Atlanta newspapers on the day news of his death reached Atlanta. On the day of his funeral, every store in Sparta closed; and a very touching obituary was published in The Sparta Ishmaelite. He was never married and was survived by his mother, father, brother Richard and sisters Fay, Alma, Edith, Doris and Florence.
