Prominent Milledgeville historian

James C. Bonner

J.C. Bonner, known and cherished for many years as a professor at what is now called Georgia College & State University, is also remembered as the author of two books. One, Milledgeville: Georgia's Antebellum Capital, is a definitive history of Milledgeville, and the other, a history of Georgia that was long used as a state textbook. When he left teaching, a faculty member suggested that he be hired to simply walk across the campus several times a day, so that students might see the model of a Southern gentleman - admirable in manners, character, and wisdom.
