James Anthony DeLaunay came from France and married fifteen year old Emilie (Emily) LeBourdais in Norfolk, Virginia (year unknown) before coming to Baldwin County, Georgia. Their son Francis Vincent DeLaunay was the first Mayor of Milledgeville.

DeLaunay's obituary in Milledgeville's Federal Union  says:

"Died on the 15th instant, at his residence in Jones county, James A. DeLaunay, Sen. in the seventieth year of his age. He was a native of France, but emigrated to this country in early life. He has left a numerous circle of relatives and friends to mourn their irreparable loss."[1]

The government gravestone marking James Anthony DeLaunay's grave in Memory Hill Cemetery, placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1931, states his service as "Georgia Troops."  "'Minute Man' Certificate of Col. Samuel Jack."[2]

The abstract of  the will of James A. DeLaunay dated March 20 1831, probated May 1832, Baldwin County Will Book A 1806-1830 reads in part:

Item: 2; I bequest all my property both real and personal to my beloved wife Emily DeLaunay during her natural life. 

Item: 3; If my wife should remarry, that all my property both real and personal be divided as follows: Viz: My wife have one third part and the other two thirds be equally divided amongst my children or their legal representatives.

Item: 4; At the death of my wife my property be equally divided amongst my children.

I appoint my wife Emily DeLaunay and my son Francis V. DeLaunay, Executrix and executor.

Witnesses: Benj. A. White, William Stanton; William Ellis.[3]

It is believed that within the brick enclosure in Memory Hill Cemetery are buried:[4]

  • Mr. and Mrs. (d. 1843) LaBoudais (parents of James A. DeLaunay's wife, Emily)
  • James DeLaunay and his wife, Emily (died October 24, 1845)
  • Andrew DuBourg and his wife Mary Virginia DuBourg (daughter of  Emily & James DeLaunay)
  • Francis Vincent DeLaunay (lawyer, first mayor of Milledgeville, died April 16, 1844)
  • Pauline - child of Emily & James DeLaunay
  • Emily - child of Emily & James DeLaunay
  • Eugene - child of Emily & James DeLaunay
  • Camilla - child of Emily & James DeLaunay
