When Benjamin S. Jordan, owner of the 950 acre Westover Plantation died, R.E. Launitz of New York, formerly of Russia, was commissioned to build his monument. The Jordan monument was shipped by train from New York. Launitz is described as the "Father of Monumental Art." He also designed the similar Pulaski monument in Savannah. The Pulaski monument, erected in 1854 at a cost of $17,000 is 55 feet high and has a statue of Liberty on top. The Jordan monument was erected in March 1858 at a cost of $20,000. It is now worth at least $300,000. It is 37 feet tall not including the figure at the top that represents Hope. This elegant memorial is the largest in Memory Hill.
