A SUDDEN DEATH:

Mr. Wm. A. Jarratt, Jr. Dies from a Stroke of Apoplexy

(obituary from Union Recorder, Nov 3, 1891)

About noon last Tuesday our citizens were shocked by the announcement that Mr. William A. Jarratt, Jr., was dead. Early in the morning he passed along the streets, as usual, going to his place of business in the store of Mr. P. J. Cline. Reaching the store, he complained of feeling unwell, saying that he passed a bad night, sleeping but little. After a short time he concluded to return home. Passing the residence of Dr. Harris on his return, he stopped to consult him. He was taken home by Dr. Harris, and went to bed, impressed with the thought that his sickness was unto death. A few hours later he was stricken with apoplexy and lived only a few minutes.

Mr. Jarratt was the only son of Dr. W. A. Jarratt, and was 37 or 38 years of age. His whole life was spent in this city. He was kind and gentle in his manners and affectionate in his disposition and was greatly beloved in this community. He leaves a wife and two children, an aged father and two sisters to mourn their loss.

His funeral took place from St. Stephen's Espiscopal church on Wednesday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. Rev. W. W. Kimball officiating. The large concourse of citizens who assembled to pay the last sad tribute of respect to his memory attested the high esteem in which he was held by our people.

From the Nov. 3, 1891 Union-Recorder: "Mr. Wm. A. Jarratt, Jr., who died last Tuesday was a member of the Legion of Honor and carried an insurance policy of five thousand dollars."
