Rev. Samuel K. Talmadge

Rev. Samuel K. Talmadge was a Presbyterian minister from New Jersey, who founded Oglethorpe University and was its president for 20 years. At one time the noted geologist, Joseph Le Conte, was on the faculty. In 1870, Oglethorpe was moved to Atlanta.

On his gravestone is an open book with the following written on its pages:
"How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings
that publisheth peace."
