Obituary: Federal Union, Jan. 9, 1855

Died on Sunday morning 31st, Annie, youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George D. Case of Scarlet fever.  On Tuesday, January 2nd, Mary, only surviving child of Dr. and Mrs. George D. Case of the same disease.

Thus in the compass of two days a father and Mother have given to the grave all that was mortal of their only children.

Language fails to adequately portray the loveliness of these lost ones, or the poignancy of their parents’ grief.  One by one they have seen their little buds drop from the parent stem, just as the first warm kisses of the sun of life began to unfold new beauties to the eye…..five little graves!  Oh what a sad spectacle…..five little ones gone…all gone.  “Bring flowers, bring flowers to strew the bier.”

But this is another picture.  Five little angel voices are singing unceasingly hymns of praise to the Great God in that beautiful home.  Oh what a sight for a parent’s eye.  If there is a balm for wounds Earth cannot heal, it is this, it is this.

When words of condolence fall heavily on the ear, when tears of heartfelt sympathy fall in vain and when the crushed bleeding heart of the mourner is almost breaking, the light of Eternity’s morning breaks in upon the darkest soul, and angel voices whisper “Peace, be still.”

Annie and Mary were not divided long in life---in death they are reunited.  God’s will be done.  May he bind up the broken heart and heal the bruised spirit.
