This is from a letter received by his mother from the war department dated 11 September 1945:

"The record shows that your son was a crew member aboard a B-24 (Liberator) bomber aircraft which departed its base on 10 September 1944 on a combat mission to Vienna, Austria. Almost directly over the target, the plane was hit by a direct burst of enemy antiaircraft gunfire in the forward section of the bomb bay. The plane burst into flames and exploded almost immediately."

He was a gunner. His plane was flying out of Pantanella, Italy air base. The bombing mission was to hit the Diesel Caterreiche Saurerwerke in Vienna. MACR [Missing Air Crew Report] number 8262.
